WebWithout doing deep inspection, you cannot inspect encrypted traffic. If there was a virus in an HTTPS session, it would pass through without being blocked. For web filtering, all you need is certificate inspection. All that does is look at the hostname from the certificate and it will know whether to block or allow the session. WebIPS can still do plenty of work even without deep inspection. But with deep inspection the FortiGate will naturally have more data to work with. AV can still work with plaintext-using protocols, but it obviously won't detect shit if malware is transported over HTTPS. (you can still try addressing this by blocking known malicious IPs/domains, etc.)
