Foamy coolant in radiator

I have recently noticed that I have a white/yellow mucous like sludge that is gathering on the roof of the clear coolant reservoir tank that is at the back of the engine. When I unscrew the cap I see can see this sludge. I have also noticed a dark layer of liquid floating on top of the coolant. Usually, if head gasket, or crack somewhere, it's combustion gasses foaming up the coolant. Could very well be a head gasket, cracked head or bore, but you check the basics first. WebAug 25, 2024 · In unpressurized systems, EG coolant can OFTEN foam even without a pump sucking in outside air. The foam displaces coolant space in the top tank, so that coolant being delivered to the top tank is pushed out the overflow. (Of course, whether there is a diverter in the top tank under the cap can have an effect as well.)
