WebMay 16, 2005 · FOLLOWING the War Between the States (1861-65), Jefferson Davis, President of the defeated Confederate States of America, was imprisoned with a view to his being tried for treason on account of his leadership role in the South’s effort to make of itself an independent nation. Most Irish-Americans had settled in the northern, American states and were thus called up to serve in the union army when the southern states seceded and formed the Confederacy in 1861. Many Irish-Americans formed their own units which embraced Irish customs such as Catholic masses and priests.
